At Heartwood Resort, you can utilize our 20.5km of trails, groomed for Cross Country Skiing!
This area of the country is perhaps it’s most peaceful with a blanket of snow. There’s something magical about moving through a forest of towering evergreens. The solitude and tranquility provide the perfect escape from the daily grind. You can enjoy these activities without ever leaving Heartwood Resort’s property.
If you want to venture into the surrounding area there are several ways to get out and take in the beauty. Area ski trails are very family-friendly and novice skiers are welcomed and encouraged to learn.
This area is home to the American Birkebeiner or Birkie as it is lovingly known. It is the largest cross-country ski race in North America, and one of the longest. It debuted in 1973 and was a founding member of the Worldloppet federation of cross-country ski marathons. It takes place the last weekend in February and has grown to include running and biking along with the cross-country skiing. There is a fun activity for everyone to get involved with.
If you prefer snowshoes to skis there are fantastic options for that as well. The Hunt Hill trails, located in Sarona near Long Lake, provide 13 miles of loops on a 600-acre nature reserve. If you’re an experienced snowshoe enthusiast be sure to check out the Beaver Brook Wildlife Area in the Spooner/Shell Lake area. It provides a back-country snowshoeing experience that’s quite popular.
