Wisconsin Namekagon River

Trout Fishing

There are 13,000 miles of classified trout streams in Wisconsin! You don’t have to do the legwork to find the best place to cast your lure and rest your head at the end of the day. Here, you can find everything you need to start planning a great getaway to Heartwood Resort and the Namekagon River for trout fishing.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is a fantastic resource for all who need to purchase a fishing license, gear, locations, and all things fishing. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, in-person purchasing is not an option. Kids 15 and under, active duty Wisconsonians who are on leave, and anyone born in 1927 or before can fish FREE every day.

Visit the DNR website to purchase or call 1-888-WDNRINFO (1-888-936-7463) for other options. Early inland trout season (catch and release) starts January 4 (5 a.m.) through May 1, when regular trout fishing season begins.

You can cast lures until your heart’s content up until October 15. The Namekagon River follows guidelines of a daily Red bag limit and one trout over 14”. Although we know trout prefer worms the most, you may only use artificial lures!

The Namekagon River has been recognized nationally for its trout fishing! It’s most known for its wild and brook varieties of trout. It is also known for being one of Wisconsin’s most wild and scenic rivers.  For a first time adventure, you can always find a guided trip locally.

Wadders and pole for trout fishing

The Attire

There isn’t a strict uniform for trout fishing. However, there is a general guideline upon which avid fishers do seem to agree.

You will need to pick some waders. They come in different heights and thickness. You will need to figure out what suits your needs. Sometimes wader boots are included with the waders.

If not, we suggest making a combo. The boots attach to the waders. This attachment keeps your pants from filling with water if you fall into the river or if the current changes. The vest; it’s what you see in your mind when you think of fishing.

It has a multitude of pockets of varying sizes. You can put lures, hooks, your wallet, keys, snacks, and a small dog to keep you company in there. Some have waterproof sections for a phone. There are also backpack style vests!

One of these will help you keep your supplies with you while you’re in the water, focused on your skills and catches. Aside from these must-haves, we recommend you choose a breathable shirt, a hat that shields the sun and allows the wind to flow, and some polarized sunglasses.
